Grounding helps us to become focused and present in the moment. When you are grounded you sense yourself more and you are more in contact. Grounding also helps you to reduce stress and anxiety. In order to ground, you focus your attention on your direct experience. This steadies your mind. Simply noticing the sensations in your arms and legs, and in the rest of your body, helps your mind to become quiet and focused.
In communication work we do physical exercises that help us feel the whole body and that make us perceive the support of the Earth under our feet. We pay attention to physical sensations, such as the sensation
of air passing over our skin, the pull of gravity on our body, the contact of body with the surface that supports us, sensations of warmth or cold, the sounds we hear, the light we perceive on our eyelids, or the colors we see, etc. After we are fully in contact with our body, we begin to notice if there are areas of tension in the body and then we use our breathing to bring relaxation into those areas.
